Bréhat Island: Your Practical Guide from Trestel & Trévou
Planning your trip to the Isle of Bréhat? Get our tips on ferries, parking, and must-see spots for an unforgettable day trip from Trestel.
Bréhat Island, a Jewel Within Easy Reach
From your rental in Trestel, you can admire the coastline stretching eastward. Just beyond, sheltered from the prevailing winds, lies a stunningly beautiful archipelago: the Isle of Bréhat. Nicknamed the "Island of Flowers" for its particularly mild microclimate that allows agapanthus, mimosas, and eucalyptus to thrive, Bréhat is an essential day trip during your stay on the Pink Granite Coast.
Accessible in just 10 minutes by boat, this car-free island offers a complete change of scenery. It's the perfect adventure for a family day out, a romantic hike, or a solo botanical exploration. Let us guide you in organizing this memorable getaway, whether you're staying in our Maison des Mouettes or our P'tite Maison.
Getting to Arcouest Point (The Ferry Terminal)
The departure point for Bréhat is Arcouest Point ("Pointe de l'Arcouest"), in the municipality of Ploubazlanec. This is where the "Vedettes de Bréhat," the main ferry company, operates from.
By Car
From Trévou-Tréguignec and your holiday home in Trestel, the drive is simple and pleasant. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes through typical Trégor landscapes. The route will take you through Tréguier, then towards Paimpol, and finally to Arcouest Point. The way is well-signposted.
Parking: A Key Detail
In high season (July-August) and on spring weekends, parking at Arcouest can be a challenge. Several paid car parks (usually a daily flat rate) are available. Our advice: leave well in advance, especially in summer, to park without stress and avoid missing your boat. The first car parks you encounter are the furthest away; feel free to drive all the way to the point to find closer ones.
The Boat Crossing: Timetables and Options
The crossing is quick and already offers superb views of the archipelago.
Timetables and Tides
Be aware that there are no fixed schedules year-round! The departure and return times for the ferries change daily according to the tides. It is therefore essential to check the official Vedettes de Bréhat website or inquire at the Guingamp - Baie de Paimpol Tourist Office the day before your visit. In season, crossings are very frequent.
Which Option to Choose?
You generally have two choices:
- The Direct Crossing: The fastest (10 minutes) and most economical option. You land directly at Port-Clos, on the South Island.
- The Guided Tour of the Island: Before dropping you off, the boat takes a full tour of the archipelago. This is an excellent way to discover the island's geography, its hidden coves, the seal colony (if you're lucky!), and to get a close look at the famous Paon lighthouse. Highly recommended for a first visit!
We advise you to book your tickets online in advance, especially in summer, to secure your spot.
Once on the Island: What to Do in Bréhat?
Bréhat actually consists of two main islands connected by a causeway, the Pont Vauban.
Getting Around: On Foot or by Bike?
The island is car-free, which is a huge part of its charm. To explore it, you have two options:
- On foot: The best way to soak up the island's atmosphere. It takes about a good hour and a half to walk from the south to the north of Bréhat at a good pace. Plan for 3 to 4 hours to complete a nice loop at a leisurely pace.
- By bike: Several bike rental shops are waiting for you near the ferry landing. This is a good option for those who want to see everything in one day. Be warned, some of the hills are quite steep!
The Must-Sees
- The South Island: More populated and floral. Stroll through the alleys of Le Bourg, the heart of the island, with its square, its historic church, and a few shops and restaurants. Don't miss Guerzido beach, famous for its pebbles.
- The North Island: Wilder, with a true Breton moorland feel. Dirt paths will lead you to the Paon lighthouse, perched on its pink granite rocks, and the Rosédo lighthouse, offering spectacular panoramic views of the open sea.
- The Citadel: On a hill on the South Island, it now houses the Verreries de Bréhat (glassworks). You can watch the artisans at work.
After a wonderful day of walking, imagine returning to the peace and quiet of your apartment with a sea view in Trestel, enjoying some fine local produce.
